We are a dance community striving, like so many others, to provide the best care for our students and families. In order to move on to the next decade without losing our costume history (and soul), and to appease my accountant, ‘Penny’s Dance Costumes For Hire’ was born.
Over the years the majority of our costumes are purchased by our families to a preset budget. If we need to exceed this budget to fill our brief then we keep them. Ten years on I find myself storing hundreds if not thousands of costumes, all of which have taken more time to create than I'm willing to admit and more investment than my accountant will ever comprehend.
For us, costumes are one of the most exciting and rewarding aspects of performing. They light up our students’ eyes and minds and are often the first point of transforming a character, or the finishing touch. Costumes can also present an arduous almost daunting task. I have often found online costumes too restrictive in fit, style, movement, colour, taste and cost. Skirt lengths, neck, back and bust lines, leotard widths, waist measurements, even when made in lycra often require individual adjustments. I have spent the last decade researching and refining ideas, half of that with the most impressive AND patient costume designer and creator (lucky me). It’s a priority of mine that students always feel comfortable and confident in what they’re wearing, in all styles of dance. Designing costumes that allow for supportive yet discreet underwear has proven to be the perfect start.
Who is Penny? Our beloved receptionist and ex dance mum who is on a mission to find order, no matter how chaotic studio life becomes. She is also our guardian costume angel.
Thank you for your interest, I hope you find our website useful. For further costume information scroll to the next section.

At least two thirds of our solo and group costumes are made by our costume extraordinaire, Tania Wright. I can’t recommend Tania highly enough – actually I don’t want to recommend her at all, there’s only one of her to go around. Costumes are also sourced from China or Bangkok and created to my design – see our complete set of both cards and chess pieces.
We often have a boy’s costume or two as part of a set, meticulously designed to suit the girls (thanks Tania). We’ve had mixed success with online costume companies, but sometimes we strike gold such as our Cyborg costumes shown in this picture. Our wonderful families also contribute significantly – and I must take this opportunity to thank them dearly.
At writing, many costumes have been worn a few times, others several, some not at all. As costumes are made with quality fabrics etc and have always been washed by our team and stored on site they are in very good to excellent condition. I will advise if there are problems with a costume, I would not hire them if I wasn’t happy to put one of my own students into it. That said, as is the nature of costumes, stitching can come away. Please advise and we will advise the best way to fix.
Please note that students do not start our performance group until age 8/9, so smaller sizes are limited.
We have accessories and props galore and have held onto many stage sets and canvasses such as our magical ‘growing’ Christmas tree and ‘Diagon Alley’. Do feel free to ask for anything that may have connection with the following stories: The Magic Faraway Tree; Sound of Music; Mary Poppins; The Wizard of Oz; Charlie and the Chocolate Factory; Alice in Wonderland/Through the Looking Glass; Peter Pan; Harry Potter; The Land of Stories and The Nutcracker.

Do let us know, you'll never know what (or who) we might find.
